Guidance Counselling at The Abbey School

The Abbey School operate a whole school approach to Guidance.

A whole school approach to Guidance at The Abbey School refers to the role of School Management, Principal, Deputy Principal, Year Heads, Tutors, Guidance Counsellor, Student Support and Wellbeing Teams,  Subject Teachers, Parents, Students and Local Community. The provision of Guidance can be broken down to Guidance for all, Guidance for some and Guidance for a few. Guidance is provided to all students from 1st to 6th Year.

It includes three aspects of Guidance:

  • Career Guidance
  • Educational Guidance
  • Personal Guidance

The Abbey School Guidance Department assists and encourages students to work towards achieving their potential by making informed choices regarding all aspects of their lives,  personal, social, educational and vocational. It also provides sensitive care and support to students when faced with life challenges and endeavours to empower them to accomplish their goals. The Guidance Department offers students both one-to-one counselling and careers advice. We operate an open-door policy throughout the academic year. Students can ask for an appointment with the Guidance Counsellor, Mr. Conor Hayes.

Parents/Guardians are also encouraged to contact Mr. Hayes to discuss any matters or concerns relating to their child or to arrange an appointment. They are also encouraged to attend information evenings on various areas such as transition to post-primary school, subject choice, programme choice, future options following Leaving Certificate, etc.
