  1. Awareness Campaign

Our awareness campaign is run around three major events in our school year. These are namely our Christmas tournaments, Health week and our summer tournaments which also will form part of our Active Schools Week for 2018.

As part of our Christmas tournaments we ran the first aspect of our Awareness Campaign. Here we ran a slogan competition with our 1st year pupils with prizes given to the winning entry.

The second part of our awareness campaign coincided with our schools ‘health week’. This week included guest speakers, workshops and cookery demonstrations. We also included our Poster initiative which looked to investigate the benefits of physical activity in terms of health, well-being and academic success. This was run in co-operation with the Art department and posters selected were used to promote the work of our Active Schools Committee during the week.

The final part of our trio of events will conclude in May when will run our ASF week. This will include our summer tournament finals and renowned 'Abbey Sports Day' which is in its 42nd year of existence.

2. Extra-Curricular Programme

The Abbey is very proud of its long, rich and varied sporting tradition. The Abbey is an Edmund Rice Trust School renowned for educational and sporting excellence. The school draws on students from West Tipperary and East Limerick. It is one of the few schools in Ireland to have won All-Ireland Colleges Senior titles in both hurling and football - (1998 -F), (1992, 2002 and 2016 -H).

The school also has representative teams in Soccer, Golf, Swimming and Rugby with the school and have been successful at county, provincial and national levels.

As part of the ASF process we looked into our schools extra curriculum layout. An initiative we explored was the GAA Future Leaders course. We will role this out in 2018/19 and it will help involve a wider range of students in the extracurricular activities currently provided by our school.

 3. School Community Links

As part of the ASF process our school has undertaken a number of initiatives to promote health and wellbeing in our school.

These include our new ASF Notice Board which is located beside our Sports Noticeboard which is in a central location in our school. We have also conducted a ‘What Clubs Are You In?’ survey to find out about what’s available for teenagers in the local area. This was carried out by TY students and the information was circulated throughout the school to inform students about the variety of activities available to them in their local area.

As a result of our participation in the ASF process we have also had a variety of ‘Taster Sessions’ ranging from Judo, S and C, Horse riding, Hiking, Pitch and Putt and Kayaking. These activities give our students a new view of activities they may not have tried before with the aim of developing a more active lifestyle in our students.

We have also developed a number of Walking/Running Routes around the local community measuring 1km, 2km, 3km, 4km and 5km and these have helped us to with our Running Initiatives such as the school 5k and the Schools sponsored run which is over forty years in existence.

4. Physical Activity during the School Day

In the Abbey we provide our student with multiple opportunities for activity during their school day. These include:

Training of School Teams

Sports teachers train teams at lunchtime with the aid of TY pupils who are assigned to teams. They help the Sports teacher/coach with the set-up of drills, refereeing of games and collection of data and stats.

Christmas and Summer Tournaments

These take place each year for all year groups. They are co-ordinated by the P.E. Department and the T.Y. students. They begin two to three week before the school terms end with our ‘tournament finals’ day taking place on the last day of term.

Provision of Equipment

Students are provided with equipment for indoor and outdoor use by the P.E. Department. Table-tennis, Basketball, Volleyball, Badminton, Hurling, Gaelic Football and Soccer are all provided for on request. Gear is given out from both our indoor and outdoor storerooms at 1:00 to 1:10 and returned at 1:50.

T.Y. Couch to 5km/ Irish Life Fitness challenge

These fitness programmes are catered for at lunchtime by members of our ASF Committee. They will train over a 9 week period in the lead up to our 5km ‘Santa Run’ as part of our ‘Active School Week.
